Maruekhathaiyawan Palace

Also known as the Palace of Love and Hope, this royal summer residence built in the 1920s has been turned into a museum. It allows visitors to see how Thai royalty once lived and provides insights into the architectural style of the era.

Maruekhathaiyawan Palace, also known as the Palace of Love and Hope, is located on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the Cha-am District, Phetchaburi Province, which is not far from the popular resort town of Hua Hin, Thailand. The palace was constructed during the reign of King Vajiravudh, also known as Rama VI, who ruled from 1910 to 1925.

This summer palace was designed by an Italian architect named Ercole Manfredi and was built in 1923. It is renowned for its distinctive architecture and charming location by the sea. The construction features a series of elegant wooden pavilions connected by covered walkways and stands on stilts, echoing the traditional Thai style of building on stilts for ventilation and flood protection. The palace's design efficiently allows sea breezes to flow through, providing natural cooling.

The name Maruekhathaiyawan means "palace by the sea" in Thai, which accurately describes its serene setting. The structure is painted in a light blue and white color scheme, adding to its airy and bright coastal aesthetic. The palace was used by the king and his consorts for relaxation and retreat from the rigors of the capital, Bangkok.

The interior of the palace features beautiful, airy rooms, royal halls, and a series of verandas and balconies that offer stunning views of the gardens and the sea. Much of the original furniture and décor, which blends both traditional Thai and European influences, has been preserved or meticulously restored.

After King Rama VI's death, the palace was less frequented by subsequent monarchs. However, it has been maintained as a historic site and is open to the public. Visitors can tour the grounds and buildings and learn about the royal lifestyle of early 20th-century Thailand, as well as about the palace’s architecture and surrounding natural beauty.

Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is considered one of Thailand’s most beautiful and important historic buildings, offering insight into the country's royal heritage and architectural traditions.
